OLH

Here's the rundown:
PRE-BABY WEIGHT 125
DELIVERY DAY WEIGHT 155.9
~ Wk 1 (8 wks pp) 140.8 lbs (Now don't get me wrong... 140 is NOT an awful weight by any stretch of the imagination... HOWEVER... I'm 5 ft 4ish, and it's just not cute.)
~ Wk 3 (11 wks pp) 142.4 (ROCK ON!)
~ Wk 4 (12 wks pp) 138.7 (AWESOME!  I was so excited about the loss that I ate an entire frozen pizza last night... by myself.  Clearly I have a lot to work on. HA!)
~ Points allowed per day 29 (This is based on the OLD WW point system. I've not really been keeping up with point tracking... oh the time it takes!  I'm also quite nervous about my milk supply.  Seeing as how I pumped 15 oz this morning, I think I need to relax, but it's still something I need to keep an eye on.  I've been drinking way more water than usual, not snacking just to snack, and I've been using a smaller plate to control portion sizes.  I think I can... I think I can...)

We've moved to Suffolk...

... well, for the week anyway.  Rachel here.  We were hit with some killer storms Friday night.  So killer that we've been out of power ever since.  We lost power Friday night around 10 pm, had to move EG's party to Riner, got B's parent's generator to revive our fridge, and lost the last bit of hot water yesterday.  Then it was released that we wouldn't be getting power back until Wednesday or Saturday.  Having a 2 month old in over 100 degree temps just didn't sound appealing to me AT ALL, so I began packing to head east to my dad's house.  We left the generator with the elderly couple across the street, who ironically seemed more intrigued that they could now watch "I love Lucy" than they were that they could now plug in a lamp and use their own fridge if they wanted to.  HA!  We got here last night only to hear there was another bunch of storms to hit the area again.  Bryan's Mom sent these photos of the damage done to their property about an hour from Bburg.

It's just madness.  I'm thankful we were able to escape the heat thanks to friends and family!

Operation limbo...

Rachel here.  Oy.  I want to start by saying how blessed I feel to have 3 healthy children, a wonderful husband, and a roof over my head.  I am thankful... I swear... but I'm currently having issues.  ISSUES!  Yep... a whoa is me post, and it will be bulleted. :)

Things that are currently ruining my bliss:
- Reese is out of preschool for the summer.  Sick I know.  I wish so desperately she was in preschool right now, so the house was just a little bit quieter.  In general, she's getting used to our current situation and it's madness, and her attitude has improved.  But she still isn't nearly as pleasant as she was.  Still picking on her sister... in fact yesterday she bit her.  Awesome.  We're working on it... daily... every waking moment of every day in fact.  We'll get there.

- Our living situation.  We're currently in an adorable little house, with GREAT landlords, in a really sweet neighborhood with AMAZING neighbors.  So, what's the problem?  It's not ours.  Stuff is everywhere still, and I feel horrible about it.  I get nervous when the girls spill something on the floor or bang something close to the walls.  I just want something that is ours that I won't feel like a nervous wreck living in.  We can't break ground quickly enough.

- My weight.  With both Reese and Emma Grace, I bounced back pretty quickly.  I'm a 30 lb gainer while pregnant, and it's always been easy to get back to previous habits and not have to worry about fitting into my clothing.  Here I am 6 wks later... still holding my breath while attempting to fit into my jeans.  I'm older, 3rd pregnancy, but most importantly... I'm unmotivated.  I'm just trying to stay afloat with these three little ladies, creating a temporary home, and keeping everyone entertained long enough to brush my teeth.  Losing this last 15 lbs is proving to be difficult to say the least.  The easiest way for me to lose weight is through my diet, so I'll be jumping on the Weight Watcher's wagon once again.  I LOVE WW.  I don't have to change my diet... just my portion sizes, and I don't have to find time to exercise everyday.  I've had a lot of success using it and can't wait to get started... after vacation. ;)

I know I have to make the effort to change each of these things, and I'm more than ready.  Operation limbo... BEGIN!

Whoa is me

Rachel here. So apparently I really have been overdoing it. :( Yesterday I was washing the windows and putting some screens in our bedroom and began to experience some of the worst pain of my life. I couldn't even walk without wincing. I emailed Bryan, went to pick Reese up from preschool... crying the entire way. Once I got home, Bryan was here, and I was able to call my doctor's office. Before leaving, I looked up all of the symptoms of preterm labor and definitely had a few of them, which caused me even more anguish. After talking to the triage nurse at the office, I was told to lay down on my left side and drink my ass in water pretty much. She said that the doctor on call at the hospital would give me a call. After speaking with her last night and this morning, we've decided that the baby must be laying funny and bearing down on some nerves. I'm still in a lot of pain when I'm on my feet for more than 5ish minutes (allowing me to you know... do nothing), and there was quite a bit of swelling in my perineum area, so I've been told to "take it easy", keep hydrated, and lay down... as much as possible... because Reese and Emma Grace are really into sitting in one spot and staring at me. The baby is SUPER active, I have no lower back pain, no other swelling, and no signs of blood, and no loss of fluid, so in general... there is extreme relief. I hope this works it's way out soon because 7 weeks of this just doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to me.

Not to mention... there is schtuff to get done! Oy.

Pregnancy/Motherhood

Rachel here. Pregnancy... oy. I'm going to be perfectly honest here... I'm done... and I feel really bad about it. I really enjoyed being pregnant while incubating both Reese and Emma Grace, but this time it's different. Keep in mind my three pregnancies (I feel bad even complaining about that... THREE... some don't even get ONE, and I'm complaining about THREE... what a bitch) have been virtually identical. I've had no complications... well, there was the Fifth's disease scare with Reese... and then the busted vein from my IV which caused my arm to swell to Popeye proportions, oh and then there was the awful bladder issue with Emma Grace (IN IOWA) where my bladder was as hard as a rock and holding WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more urine than it was supposed to be... but I've been INCREDIBLY blessed. In fact I was so happy during those pregnancies (puking EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE ENTIRE PROCESS), that I vividly remember saying "I would be pregnant every day for the rest of my life if I could." This time... I'm tired, I'm puking, I'm emotional, I'm a full time mom of TWO OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE, two little people who have places to be and people to see... they have schedules! And the house... OH THE HOUSE. We are bound and determined, but we are pooped. Bryan is beyond busy at work, which makes me want to help pick up more of the slack here at the house, but holy bejesus... I'm done. Then there is Bryan... cracking jokes about having ANOTHER baby. I literally want to stab him in the eye every time he says something about it, but what if he really does? Maybe he could become a big brother or something because seriously? SERIOUSLY? :) The absolute highlight... feeling PBB punch, kick, roll around like crazy!

I may have grown tired of pregnancy, but that doesn't mean I don't adore the ground my children walk on. Even in their ugliest of moments... they were worth it, and I know I'll feel the same about Princess Baby Boo (I've learned to say that with a straight face... took a while... oh these girls!). There are quite a few little Mommy Blogger posts that have been circulating... mainly the ones of serious interest to me are by Glennon Melton over at Momastery. She's brilliant. Not in that she's a genius super mom, but in that she's open and brave and honest. One of her most recent posts had to do with SAHMs vs. Working mothers. If you haven't read it... YOU MUST! Too often working mothers are viewed as having mommy guilt because they aren't always with their children... life is filled with having to learn to balance family and work... and attempting to do them both well. Glennon touches on the mommy guilt that SAHMs ALSO have... not contributing monetarily to the family amongst other things. Working mothers tend to think SAHMs are lazy, bon bon eating, non-showering, uneducated women looking for the easy way out. SAHMs mothers tend to think working mothers are selfish, overly done up women who would rather spend money on highlights and manicures than on their children, and think it's more than fine to let others raise their children. It's a really interesting read... and one where the comments are just as amazing as the article. The moral of the story is quit beating each other up... children need to see both types of hard working women in their everyday lives... let them see all of the options that are out there for them, and let them choose.

So in conclusion... I know... are you still awake... still reading... basically... I'm just a tired, sometimes lazy, never done up, extremely educated, always hungry... not for bon bons, over not having control of my body, ecstatic to be adding another little lady to the mix, confused as to attempting to add a little man to the mix, in dire need of a beer but am settling for a crappy cup of coffee in my awesome New Orleans mug, a person who LOVES and APPRECIATES being given the chance to witness all of my children's milestones with my own two eyes... because that's what's good for me, a person who sometimes wishes there was more time in the day for myself, a person who sometimes wishes I had something of my own. And to be honest... I wouldn't change ANY OF IT. Not a single thing. Well... maybe the beer part. :)

Fires, and Earthquakes, and Hurricanes... OH MY!

Rachel here. Virginia has had a rough ride the last few months. 4 months ago our area was hit HARD by tornadoes... which landed my girls and I under the stairs skyping with Bryan who was out of town. There have been fires burning in the Great Dismal Swamp. Last Tuesday our entire area was shaken by an earthquake... COMPLETELY shocking... it was nutso. And now today, while I hung out in the mountains, my entire family hunkered down in Tidewater to ride out Irene. So far all are safe and preparing for the surge. This what was we saw all day:... big, thick, crazy clouds... and it's just now starting to get pretty windy out. Mother Nature may have a few up and coming tricks up her sleeve, and frankly... I'm not amused. :)

Lyme disease

Rachel here. It's been a whirlwind of a month. Tomorrow I finish my last 2 pills for my Lyme disease treatment. I KNOW! Lyme disease? Crazy. It's been a learning experience for sure. It all started the Friday before Memorial Day. Bryan and I ventured to a part of Bryan's parent's property where a large tree was just cut down. I was on the hunt for the perfect stumps to add to a cute little play area for the girls in our own backyard... amongst some other smaller trunks/limbs to make some cute little building blocks. The materials were found, loaded... all was well. Later that evening at dinner, Bryan noticed I had a tick on the top of my ear. I removed it... no biggie.

Monday, Memorial Day, I stepped on a bee in the backyard... had some swelling... no biggie.

Exactly one week later, I woke up to an extremely itchy foot... the bee sting foot. I lathered it with lotion, scratched it... nothing was relieving the itch. Within two hours there was a large, raised, red, hot rash on the bottom of my foot all the way to my ankle. Luckily I was able to see a doctor that evening... the diagnosis... Cellulitis... basically a staph infection from my sting. The doc notices a small dot on the top of my foot... I say it's probably nothing, but want to talk about the bottom of the foot instead. I get placed on an antibiotic... no biggie... sort of.

The next day... the small dot/bump on my foot gives me an eery feeling. I see if anything will come out of it. I'm able to get a small black something out of it... no biggie (would later assume it was a small Deer Tick).

Within a few minutes I have a bulls eye rash. Thinking that doesn't seem normal, I get on the internet. My prognosis... Lyme disease. The only symptoms I had until that point were fatigue, headaches... etc... symptoms of life in general. The rash got me though. I began talking with friends and family on through the weekend... the plan was to call the doc just for some piece of mind... I'm doubting the severity.

Monday morning... call doc... they seem panicked... I get an appointment immediately... the rash is gone. After explaining what had been happening, the doc skipped all the testing (it was going to be a long drawn out process, and the doc was concerned with time) and immediately prescribed me my new antibiotic. He told me he was going to go with his gut instead of waiting six weeks for the results he knew he was going to see. I was going to be positive. That very day I began to experience severe aching in my right knee... BIGGIE.

I began the antibiotic the very next day (needed to finish out the first antibiotic first). Symptoms became increasingly uncomfortable. Severe aching, numbness, shooting pains all in my right leg. I became sick just about every morning from the antibiotic... it needed to be taken on an empty stomach which is hard to do after not eating for 12+ hours. My right leg and both arms would tingle and burn... ALL ... DAY... LONG... for 10 days. It felt like my whole body was asleep (like when your foot falls asleep)... not very much fun. Luckily the side effects have dwindled some, but there is still some aching in my leg.

While this entire thing is beyond comprehension to me, I can't help but be thankful I went with my gut and caught this early. I shouldn't have to endure swollen joints, a quirky nervous system, or even heart issues... because I caught it early enough. The longer you wait, the less that can be done for you... there is no cure. If I hadn't been proactive, my prognosis could be MUCH different... a life of pain. I'm hoping at worst my leg has some aches and pains every now and then... at best... the antibiotic kicked some butt and I can put this all behind me.

Moral... TRUST YOUR GUT INSTINCT! ;)

And so it begins...

... the rest of my life. Rachel here. I'm 30. Today... March 28th... I turned 30. DO WHAT?! I have a mixture of feelings. Honest to god I feel like I just graduated high school. And then I'm reminded "just" is not synonymous with 12 years ago. Oy. Then there is college... wasn't that just yesterday? Nope... that was a wedding and 2 children ago. I'm not sure what I thought 30 would be like. Do I go out and buy wrinkle cream now? Is it time to start dying my hair to cover the grey? Do I contemplate tattooing myself to feel younger? Maybe a nice hangover is in the works. Or maybe I'll just continue to live my life... with my loving husband and adorable girls. Life goes on I suppose. While we are going out for a happy birthday Mommy dinner tonight, we celebrated last night with cake and singing... you know... while I was still 29. :)

Routines vs. Schedules

Rachel here. When I was teaching, schedules ruled my life. I needed to make sure I was at the right place at the right time ALL DAY LONG. I thought for sure I was set up for life... until I had kids of my own. The girls do have certain places they need to be at certain times, but in general... we're routine people these days. As the girls get more and more independent, our routine changes. And there are some serious routine changes that need to go on over here. There are tons of things that aren't getting done, and I know there is time for them, but the issue is looking for that time. AKA... quit watching "The Real Housewives of... insert city here..." and "Game Day." I guess I'm looking for a happy mixture of routine and schedule.

Right now this is a typical week... the scheduled part at least... which changes as we sign up for new classes and finish old ones...

Dr. Jekyll... Mr. Hyde...

Rachel here. Reese has been doing WONDERFULLY! She's always been a real delight to us, but we hit a huge brick wall with her when it came to the "shoot me in the face" 3's. She's continued to respond really well to different strategies I've been using with her, and it's amazing how much she's changed. Of course I had to change a lot of things about myself in order to get her to respond the way I wanted her to. There is absolutely no more yelling in our house. We've all gotten really good about sharing our feelings and using our words rather than getting frustrated. I continue to repeat Reese's feelings back to her resulting in temper tantrums being squashed before they can even get started. IT'S AMAZING! Things around here are just so much more pleasant. Bryan and I BOTH tuck Reese in at night now. We used to take turns and found she was being AWESOME when I would tuck her in, and was acting less than stellar with Bryan. With him being in and out of town, there was just way too much that wasn't consistent, so there were changes that needed to be made in that department as well. Pillow talk has been going really great too. After we read Reese her nigh time story, we each talk about 3 great things that happened to us during the day. I think this might be Reese's favorite thing during the entire day. We're still working with her on her stranger anxiety. She just gets very worked up if she's surrounded by too many people she doesn't know... especially if they are "in her space" or approach her. The playground can sometimes be a nightmare. It's definitely something that may take a while to figure out.

Reese continues to love Montessori, and we couldn't be happier. I'm both looking forward to the summer because of the weather, but I'm also dreading it because she'll be with me in the mornings as opposed to at school. I'm already pulling resources and activities to keep her interested, having fun, and busy learning this summer. I know one thing for sure... we will be living outside. :)In other Reese news. The poor girl is sick. She has that weird virus where the only symptom is a spiking fever that comes and goes... for days. So far she's topped out at 102.9 and we've been on this roller coaster ride since Wednesday night. There are absolutely no other symptoms. THANK GOD BECAUSE VOMIT DRIVES ME BONKERS. We can tell when the fever is getting ready to rear it's ugly head, however, because she tells us she's "so cold I'm shaking", and she gets super grumpy. Hopefully we'll be done with it soon! Her teacher mentioned that others in her class have battled it for up to a week. :( Let's hope Emma Grace doesn't get it!

The good... the bad... the ugly...

Rachel here. I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again... this blog is for me and my children. It's for me to remember this precious time that I have with them. I try really hard not to complain on here, try really hard not to judge others, and try really hard to document "the good... the bad... and the ugly." My children ARE NOT perfect, my marriage is not perfect, I am not perfect. Emma Grace was a biter, and Reese throws a wicked temper tantrum. I yell too much and Bryan works too much. That's just our life. I say LIFE because that's what it is... we are one single family unit. We eat together, sleep together, breath together... fail together and thrive together. Right now we are working together to beat the, what I like to refer to as, the "shoot me in my face" 3's. This is how my sweet sweet child chose to spend the majority of sweet Aly's 2nd birthday party. She was ugly to guests, she was territorial of her bounce house, and she spent most of her time in the hallway acting like she had so sense. It was not only embarrassing, but it also makes you feel like a failure as a parent. It's very easy to judge parents whose children chose to act like complete morons, but take it from me... don't judge because you may just find yourself a parent of a child who chooses to act like a complete moron. :)

Reese was really great at throwing tantrums when she was 2, and she's even better now. She has a really hard time controlling her emotions and has the pipes of an opera singer when it comes to screaming, but she comes by it honestly. We're firm believers in timeout, and Reese goes through phases where her and timeout are like long lost cousins, but they've recently taken a turn for the worst. We used to be able to get Reese to sit in timeout for her allotted time with little to no tears. Now it's like caging a wild bull. It's even escalated to her hitting the walls and kicking the front door. Charming. Her behavior really forced Bryan and I to take a look at what was happening, why she was acting this way, and what WE were doing/not doing to help her.

I have a horrible temper. I get frustrated VERY easily if something is out of my control. When I get worked up I yell. Not very cute. Bryan is a softy. He doesn't like to argue. He avoids confrontation at all costs. And Reese has him wrapped around her little finger... and she knows it. Sorry honey. :) Bryan and I have agonized over our own behavior and what we needed to change to make Reese the best Reese she can be. It can be very difficult to be on the same page due to Bryan's current schedule. For the last month he's been in and out of town on business. We're talking 2 days home, 5 days gone, 2 days home, 5 days gone. Not really your dream situation for working on consistency. Unfortunately it's not the best scenario, but Bryan HAS a job... and one that allows me to stay home with my children, which is what I desperately wanted, so it's what we have to deal with right now. In hopes of helping Reese, we met with her Montessori teacher on Monday to seek some advice. We wanted to know what their daily routine/rules were in the classroom, so that the days Reese isn't in school will flow with the days that she is. The more things that are similar between school and home the better. Reese is very well behaved at school and LOVES it. She knows what is expected of her there, so our goal here at home is for her to realize there are rules/consequences here as well.

After a lot of reading, thinking, feeling, and crying Reese and I sat down and created this:We talked about the rules we wanted to have for our home. The big one "No Screaming". Now this is the one that both Reese and I need to work on the most. "No hitting/kicking" are for her outbursts while in timeout. We're still working on the consequence portion. Since these things are mainly done in timeout (already being the consequence for other poor behavior), we haven't figured out the next step yet. Our main goal right now it to bring her down from her screaming/hitting/kicking fits, so maybe there won't be a consequence. I've thought of placing paper and crayons for her in timeout to draw/write things out... but really we're in the beginning stages of this. Then we also developed her "good girl chart." Her main reason for ending up in timeout is for "being a poor listener." She lays on top of her sister, we tell her to get off, she doesn't listen, EG starts crying, we tell her again to get off, she again doesn't listen... resulting in timeout. If we can work on her listening with her, we hope to cut out the extra 2 minutes of mayhem that results in timeout... and screaming/hitting/kicking... OY VEY. So back to the GGC... basically EVERY SINGLE TIME I ask her to do something/get something/say something... and she listens the first time, she gets a sticker to put on her GGC. All of the pieces are foam except for the yellow post its... that way the chart can be used over and over, and we simply replace the post its. I really like this because I've made it double as Reese's own personal calendar. The frog tells her what day it is, and below the frog are the activities she has going on that day. It's nice because she can see what day Daddy comes home, or what day she's going to Grandma and Grandaddy's, a play date, Art class, and school. She seems to really love it. And although we've only been using it for a couple of days... I can already see an improvement in her behavior. She knows that if she stays on top of what I ask her to do, she'll be rewarded. So far the stickers are enough of an incentive... well that and some of the things I've been working on myself. Along with her stickers, I've been working on not getting worked up (which OBVIOUSLY helps out the situation). When I notice her getting upset/defiant, I'm sure to get down on her level so our eyes are locked and I repeat her feelings to her. Before I would just try to change the behavior... make her stop screaming... or let her scream until she eventually stopped... this technique allows her to know that I understand her feelings first. When she's upset, I try to diffuse the problem, when she doesn't quiet, I get loud, then she gets loud... then all craziness ensues. I've noticed though that by my repeating her feelings to her (not long and drawn out... very quick and to the point, mostly broken sentences), she sees that I understand and is then open to what I have to say. I take my turn, and then we work together to fix it. Screaming stops... no timeout. Thank you "The Happiest Toddler on the Block," I know... dorky... but so far... an awesome book. I'm also sure to constantly compliment her behavior... not her. "Reese I love that you're being so helpful!" NOT... "Reese you're the best helper ever!" I don't need her to be one of those children that thinks her shenanigans don't stink... for real.

Another issue we're having with Reese is her seeking attention in annoying ways. "Reese, can you please pick up the play-doh tools." "I don't know how." "Don't you clean up after yourself at school?" "Yes, but I don't know how to... I need your help." ANNOYING. She's did that to me twice yesterday, and I wanted to implode. Since Bryan and I are part of this problem, I knew I needed to remain calm, let her know she could do it, and let her know that she would do it... without my help... because after all... I didn't make the mess. She was beginning to get worked up, but I was the one that needed to show her how to remain calm and get the job done. "Reese, I know it's a big mess to clean up, but you made the mess, so you need to clean it up. What if you started by picking up just the pink tools." Wouldn't you know she started to pick up the pink ones and then realized it was going to be quicker to just pick them all up instead of taking the time to search out the correct color?! So now I've found myself trying to be more creative in getting to her do what I need her to do without me giving in.

She's been given many more responsibilities to keep her little hands busy. In Montessori school they are VERY independent. The idea is to "teach them to do it themselves." If I'm cleaning something or cooking something that is safe enough for Reese to do... I show her how to do it, and she does it. The last few nights, she's successfully helped me with dinner, setting the table, she even made her own pb and honey sandwich today for lunch. She's taking such pride in herself... learning she CAN DO IT. As long as we can stick to this, stand our ground, remain calm, and Bryan and I can be on the same page and be consistent... we'll blow through these naughty times... with more than a scowl on our faces. :)

On another note... in hopes of taking my living room back from my girls and their toys, Reese's Montessori tasks are now in cute baskets on top of the shelves in the playroom. I am slowly regaining my ability to breath. Life is too short to not enjoy every waking moment with your children.

Winter...

... is just around the corner. Rachel here. I took these pictures from our bathroom window yesterday as I was getting ready to step into the shower... yes, I actually took a shower yesterday... seriously. These pictures make me sad. Not depressed just sad for the coming winter. Winter here is cold, and wet, and all around boring. It's always icy, so you can't drive anywhere. And I'm virtually locked in the house ALL DAY... BY MYSELF... well, not really by myself... I'll have the girls, but they aren't always the greatest candidates for adult conversation... or any conversation that doesn't have to do with "peepoo" or timeout. This is the time of year I dread because I know Bryan will be out of town for about 2 1/2 months come January. Yes he can come home on weekends, but seriously... SERIOUSLY... 5 days at a time, locked in my house, playing playdoh and watching "Backyardigans" can take a toll on a person. If they'll have us, we'll probably be spending some time with my family in Tidewater. It makes me sad that Reese (and EG) doesn't get to see them often, so hopefully we'll get to make up for some lost time. And maybe they won't want to talk about boogers. :)

30 min

Rachel here. I'm currently breathing. Taking long deep breaths because it's been one of those days... well let's say weeks. It's been rainy, Bryan's been out of town, and it's just been blah. Today Reese begged me to go 'bye bye', so we ran some errands. Wouldn't you know she screamed and threw her sippy cup at me at Target, and then she screamed 'bye bye!!!!' repeatedly at the top of her lungs at Once Upon a Child. We were literally in each place for 5-10 minutes tops.

We get home, and the neighbor boys were out playing... thank god! She loves the boys, and the boys love her, so they played for a good 20ish minutes before Kurt said "why don't you go inside and take 10 minutes to yourself?' SERIOUSLY?! People... I peed... I peed with the door CLOSED! No one bursting in on me saying 'pee pee?' It was AMAZING! I went back out to collect my daughter, and she wasn't finished playing... but it was starting to rain. What did Kurt suggest next? 'Go home... and come and get Reese at 430.' That's 30 more minutes of Reeseless time! I wish I could pee again! Here's what I've been doing for 30 minutes:Ahhh... the glamorous life of a SAHM. :)

Cross your fingers...

Rachel here. Hopefully I won't kick myself for saying this, but yesterday was an AMAZING day! Reese was the perfect little thing... I just wanted to bottle her up and sell her to everyone who has a crabby kid. ;) She played wonderfully both with me and by herself despite the fact it was icky outside and we stayed in all day. There were no tears or arguments at nap time, in fact she wanted to go down a little earlier than normal! She slept for 2 hours! We had a wonderful afternoon, and I put her down for bed at 730 after reading her book... with no tears or screaming!!!! She did kick her unborn baby sister once while I was trying to change her diaper, but I call that a minor infraction when everything else ran so smoothly!

We're trying to really explain to her when she does something that we don't like. Instead of putting her right into timeout, I've been giving her 2 chances to fix the behavior before we put her on her stool. It seems to be working really well. Granted she does occasionally end up in timeout, but this system is working much better. I also got the book "The Happiest Toddler on the Block"... it came highly recommended by Miranda (a friend of a friend... THANKS MIRANDA!). I usually hate self-help type books, but I do have a couple that I've used for reference through this whole mommy hood thing. The reviews that I read sounded great, so I hopped on the used book website and $11 later... I'll have some reading to do in the car on our way to Florida!

Not one of my finer moments

Rachel here. I usually try to post only happy wonderful things about our family life and Reese growing up, but the fact of the matter is... everything is not always wonderful and peachy. While I started this blog to help keep our families (mainly mine because they live so far away) in the loop, it's ultimately a time capsule for my children. I want them to know what life was like when they were little. Am I obsessive about what words Reese is learning or whether or not she can eat with a spoon yet? ABSOLUTELY... I want to remember what these days were like 10, 15, 20, even 50 years from now. I deserve the right to be obsessive because ultimately this blog is for me... mine... I write what I want to write and how I want to write it. It's about the great times and the not so easy times. With that said...

Reese is driving me bonkers. DO NOT GET ME WRONG... I love her to death and for the most part she's a doll, but the past couple of weeks have been really trying. She's learning so many new words and how to do so many new things, which are so wonderful, but at the same time I think she's starting to realize how much she wants to know how to say and how to do that her frustration level more times than not is through the roof. She is demanding more and more of my attention these days, which is fine. I've gotten pretty spoiled with her being very content playing on her own, but now I'm realizing she wants to play with me way more than she has previously. That is not a problem... except for when I need to sit and relax because of the lack of sleep from the previous night, or I'm just not feeling well (this pregnancy is really kicking my butt). It's times like these when she insists on hitting me, kicking me, screaming at me, and being all around MEAN to get my attention that are taking it's toll. I've been more than understanding. She's a toddler I know that... she's trying to tell me she's frustrated, but to become a human punching bag is frustrating too. She hits and kicks when it's time to leave the library, she's hits and kicks when it's time to leave the playground, she hits and kicks when it's time to get out of the sandbox, and now she even hits and kicks AND screams at the top of her lungs at nap time and bedtime. It's just too much sometimes especially because I'm so hormonal and physically uncomfortable.

If you're even still reading this I know what you're thinking... "oh she should try to divert her attention when it's time to transition... she should set up a routine when it's time for nap time/bedtime." I know... I'm not a guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm also NOT helpless. I do hand her other objects while trying to get her to leave something she's having fun doing, I do have a solid routine with her throughout the day... and when she's thrown off in the SLIGHTEST is when we tend to have these problems that take days to recover from. I'm slowly learning that it's just not worth throwing off her lunchtime/nap time/bedtime... anything for that matter... if it's just going to frustrate her and ultimately me.

While this may be categorized as 'one of your downer posts', which is what Bryan likes to call them, they are MY words, MY feelings, it's MY blog, and frankly... I feel better, so I guess there you have it.

I contribute...

Rachel here. So last week our AAL representatives stopped by the house to talk to Bryan and I about our life insurance status and "what would happen if"s. While I like these men very much, I was taken aback by their presentation. Being told NUMEROUS times that I don't contribute because I don't 'work' didn't sit well with me. I'm quite aware I don't have an income, but to say I don't contribute really hit me hard. After throwing a temper tantrum (after they left of course), I was determined to find ways that I can contribute FINANCIALLY. I'm a very educated driven woman... it's not like I'm free loading off of my husband here for goodness sakes! Going back to teaching is not an option for me right now. I'm lucky enough to have a great husband who agrees that me being home with my nugget and unborn child is important enough/doable to make some sacrifices. If we had WONDERFUL AFFORDABLE child care in our area, we may be dealing with a whole different scenario. I have friends who have great opportunities with child care that would be great for us, but we just don't have those options.

How can I contribute? We clip coupons, but find that a lot of the products we use (organic) aren't available at discount with a coupon. After doing multiple searches on-line for ways to better your finances, I found a really creative idea thanks to a friend of a friend's blog. While she provides links to TONS of different deals... some of which are available to us, and some that are not... there was a great idea she found on another blog. It's more of a challenge than it is anything else. The idea is to eat only the food you already have in your home for an entire week. No going to the grocery store to buy new things. This is a huge money saving opportunity for us right now both with me being pregnant and never knowing what I want to eat and us consistently buying random things as opposed to actual meals. While the challenge is for one week only, we'll be extending it to two weeks because we'll be out of town for a few days with Bryan for work. We will be going to the store, however, to purchase milk, bread, and fresh fruit when we need it for nugget.

We began our challenge this evening with grilled cheese sandwiches and minestrone soup. The grilled cheese were extra special because all we had was shredded cheese... SPECIAL. Anyway here are the before pictures of our food supply. Please disregard the messy fridge... hopefully this will also teach me to clean it out regularly and wipe up. :)

Please disregard the Nutty bars and Girl Scout cookies... those are my emergency pregnancy foods. :)

Oh and there is NO eating out, which is a serious problem because that's all I want these days... but I WILL CONTRIBUTE! :)
